| d) Location and area | Maps showing the exact location of the nominated property are provided in Appendix 1. The nominated "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" constitute a set of seventeen cultural properties (each hereinafter referred to as a "Nominated Property") which are located near the center of the old city of Kyoto and in the foothills of the Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama mountains which surround it. This area contains the present-day cities of Kyoto, Uji and Otsu. Each of these seventeen cultural properties is surrounded by a buffer zone (hereinafter referred to as the "Nominated Property Buffer Zone") which controls the urban planning and design in the immediate vicinity of the protected property. Encompassing the seventeen properties and their buffer zones is another protected area (hereinafter referred to as the "Historic Environment Control Area") which controls the environment of the surrounding areas in order to maintain harmony with the historic properties. The nominated area is composed of the Nominated Properties, the Nominated Property Buffer Zones, and the Historic Environment Control Area. The areas of the properties, together with the areas of the buffer zones and the Historic Environment Control Area, are given in Table 1. **The buffer zones of Byodo-in and Ujigami-jinja are unified together
