c) Name of property The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama
d) Location and area The nominated cultural property is composed of a set of three historic mountain villages located in scattered sites in the Shirakawa-go and Gokayama areas, surrounded by the steep mountains of the Chubu Region in central Japan.

The names of these three villages are Ogimachi, Ainokura and Suganuma. Ogimachi is located in the current administrative district of Shirakawa-Mura*, in Ono-gun, Gifu Prefecture; Ainokura, in Taira-mura, and Suganuma, in Kamitaira-mura, are both located in Higashi-tonami-gun, Toyama Prefecture.

* The term "Mura", although literally translated as "village", is defined by government to represent a larger administrative district, often comprising a number of village communities.

Each nominated property is surrounded by its own primary buffer zone (Buffer Zone I), and further protected by a secondary buffer zone (Buffer Zone II), a wider area which contains all three villages.


Buffer Zone I: an area in which alteration of existing state is strictly, regulated to preserve the natural and/or historic environment.

Buffer Zone II: an area in which development actions over a certain scale are controlled to conserve the natural environment and the cultural landscape.

The locations of the nominated properties and their buffer zones are as follows:

Ainokura Village : Latitude 36。25' north / Longitude 136。56' east
Suganuma Village : Latitude 36。24' north / Longitude 136。53' east
